This plot shows galactic positions of stars with rotation periods from the TESS
All-Sky Rotation Survey (Boyle, Bouma & Mann 2026). The Sun is at the center. In
the default (top-down) camera view, the galactic center is 8 kpc to the right, and
the direction of galactic rotation is up.
The survey looked at stars with d < 500 pc brighter than T < 16 over most of
the sky, except for a small region east of the galactic center. For this plot, we
omitted stars with |z|>250 pc.
v_amp is the amplitude of the distance-corrected proper motion vector in units of
km/s.
- Left drag: rotate camera.
- Right drag or two-finger drag: pan.
- Scroll/pinch: zoom.
- Clicking "Start velocity step" advances through stars with a tangential velocity
range noted in the lower
right.
